The Walker Art Gallery has inspired visitors with its world-famous collections for more than 125 years.

National Museums Liverpool Into the Future has greatly increased public access to the fine and decorative arts at the Walker by reclaiming galleries previously long-closed to the public.

The first part of the project involved the creation of the Walker's first dedicated special exhibition galleries. Since they opened in 2002 these galleries have hosted a range of blockbuster exhibitions, including 'Rossetti', 'Henry VIII Revealed', 'George Romney' and the biennial 'John Moores exhibition of contemporary art'. The galleries include rooms that are specially conditioned to display prints, drawings and other delicate light-sensitive work.

In 2004 the Craft and Design gallery opened, as the final phase of the Into the Future project at the Walker. This gallery displays items National Museums Liverpool's wide-ranging collection of decorative arts, including important historic and contemporary pieces.
