Morecambe Bay from Warton Crag

Title: Morecambe Bay from Warton Crag
Date: 1862
Artist(s): Daniel Alexander Williamson (British: English, born:24 September 1823, died:12 February 1903)
Materials: Oil; Board
Information: Williamson's connections with the Liverpool school are through his exhibiting at the Liverpool Academy, being a close friend of William Windus, and for a time in the 1860s painting with Pre-Raphaelite precision. His brilliant colouring and detailed depiction of the sheep reflects that of William Holman Hunt (1827 - 1910), and in this painting he appears to be directly influenced by Hunt's 'Strayed Sheep' (Tate Gallery).

William Lindsay Windus (1822–1907) stayed with Williamson in 1864 and painted 'The Stray Lamb' (Walker Art Gallery) which also has affinities with Hunt's work. In later years Williamson's style changed completely and he made impressionistic, misty watercolours.
