'Morecambe Bay from Warton Crag' - Daniel Alexander Williamson

Detail of sheep at rest by rocks

Williamson's connections with the Liverpool school are through his exhibiting at the Liverpool Academy, being a close friend of William Windus, and for a time in the 1860s painting with Pre-Raphaelite precision. His brilliant colouring reflects that of Holman Hunt, and in this painting he appears to be directly influenced by Hunt's 'Strayed Sheep' (Tate Gallery). W. L. Windus stayed with Williamson in 1864 and painted 'The Stray Lamb' (Walker Art Gallery) which also has affinities with Hunt's work.
