Our mission

American Friends of National Museums Liverpool, Inc. (AFNML) was established in 2006. It is a non-profit organization that seeks to raise awareness and financial support for museums, particularly National Museums Liverpool.

During 2007/2008 AFNML Inc. seeks to establish funds in support of two new venues of international significance; the International Slavery Museum and the Museum of Liverpool. Donations made in support of these projects will help provide key funding towards the continuation and development of these venues.

International Slavery Museum

In 1994, National Museums Liverpool opened the Transatlantic Slavery Gallery, the first of its kind in the world. There is now a pressing need to tell a bigger story because of its relevance to contemporary issues. The creation of a major new International Slavery Museum to promote the understanding of transatlantic slavery and its enduring impact will open in August 2007, the bicentenary of the abolition of the British slave trade. Museum of Liverpool

The Museum of Liverpool will be one of the world’s leading city history museums setting a benchmark for museums of its kind. The museum will demonstrate Liverpool’s unique contribution to the world. It will provide the city with a museum which explains, explores and captures Liverpool’s astonishingly diverse and vibrant history and character on an international scale.
