Fiona graduated from Leeds University in 1982 with a joint honours degree in history and archaeology and began her museum career as a volunteer at the Williamson Museum and Art Gallery in Birkenhead.

In 1983 she joined Merseyside County Museums, which later became National Museums Liverpool, as a graduate trainee with placements in archaeology, antiquities, conservation, education, ethnology and social history. During this period she studied for her AMA, which she was awarded in 1987.

In subsequent years she was appointed as assistant keeper of antiquities and later curator of British antiquities and numismatics. In 1996 she joined the capital projects team, before moving to her present position in 2003.
