John became the director of World Museum in 2003. In 2005 he was appointed as one of two joint deputy directors of public services, with responsibility for collections management.

He has a degree in art history from Edinburgh University and trained as a teacher at Reading University before becoming a museum assistant at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1974.

For 28 years he worked in art galleries and museums on Tyneside, where he ran the Shipley Art Gallery, the Laing Art Gallery and Discovery Museum and wrote articles and books on Victorian artists from the North East. From the 1990s he led capital developments at the Laing Art Gallery and Discovery Museum which more than doubled their numbers of visits to half a million between them.

Since joining National Museums Liverpool he has overseen the final part of the Into the Future project.  This involved the successful transformation of Liverpool Museum into World Museum Liverpool, which has achieved 390,000 visits in its first six months of opening.
