Michael is originally from St Helens, Merseyside. After completing a BSc (Hons) degree in Accounting at the University of Hull he undertook a Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology.

Following university he worked as part of a small Finance/IT team at Profile Recruitment Ltd in Hampstead, London. In 1998 he relocated back to the North of England and joined Milo plc, a toiletries and cosmetics manufacturing company, as Systems Accountant; where he had responsibility for management reporting and the IT infrastructure.

In 2000, he joined Pilkington plc as a European Systems Auditor and qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA) before progressing to Audit Senior in 2002. In 2004 he moved into the Building Products business line - a £1.2 billon turnover business with manufacturing operations in more than 20 countries. As Global Controller, he had responsibility for managing the business's annual budget process, monthly management reporting, capital planning/forecasting and the group’s insurance arrangement, in which capacity he was a director of Pilkington's insurance captive company.

Michael currently resides in St Helens, with his wife and two dogs. He is an ex-Student Rugby League international and has represented England in SRL World Cup and Home Nations tournaments. In his spare time he still enjoys Rugby League, snowboarding and is currently studying to obtain his private pilot’s licence. He is also a trustee and treasurer of the Clock Face Miners Welfare Centre.
