Tony studied history at Birmingham University and during his career has had responsibility for historic houses and museum collections in the West Midlands and Liverpool. He was curator of maritime history at Merseyside Maritime Museum before becoming director in 2003.

He was the project leader for the former Transatlantic Slavery Gallery at the Maritime Museum, which opened in 1994 to great acclaim. He has also played a key role in the development of the new International Slavery Museum, the first phase of which opened on 23 August 2007.

Tony's other roles include

  • Honorary Treasurer of the International Congress of Maritime Museums
  • Council member of the Historic Society of Lancashire & Cheshire
  • Fellow of the Royal Historic Society
