Curatorial Careers at National Museums Liverpool

Curator showing an object to a member of the public

Curators

The word curator comes from the Latin curare - (to care for), their role being both to look after the collections and to make them accessible to visitors. Collection-related responsibilities include acquiring new objects, researching, cataloguing, storing, publishing, interpreting and displaying the collections. They are also on hand to answer enquiries from the public and give talks and lectures to a variety of audiences.

Archives

Our archivists store and care for historical documents and records, including original manuscripts and volumes, letters, maps, plans and photographs. Within archives, librarians are responsible for the care and documentation of the library collection of books and journals. An important element of both roles is to provide advice and answer enquiries from both staff and the public.

Archaeology

Excavations are only part of the work of an archaeologist; the role also involves planning and surveying sites and recording, interpreting and analysing finds afterwards.
