Postcard, 'World Aids Day 1st December 1995'

MOL.2015.69.3

About this object

World AIDS Day has been commemorated each year on 1 December since 1988 to raise awareness about HIV, show support for those living with HIV and to commemorate those who have died because of HIV/AIDS. Merseyside has supported World AIDS Day every year since it started with events to show solidarity with people here and all over the world.

In 2014 the Museum of Liverpool displayed a giant red ribbon on the window of The People’s Republic Gallery to coincide with World AIDS Day and their display, developed in partnership with Sahir House – ‘Now+then: Three Decades of HIV in Merseyside’ .

Each year World AIDS Day has a theme, drawing attention to issues surrounding HIV/AIDS such as stigma, discrimination and universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention. Each year’s theme is decided following consultation with local, national and international HIV/AIDS awareness groups and organisations.

The theme is used throughout the year to internationally highlight HIV/AIDS awareness at major political events such as the G8 summit.
Kindly donated to the Museum of Liverpool by Andrew Dineley.
