Rosa Bonheur's original painting was made for her dealer Mr. Gambart, as a pendant to his 'King of the Forest'. At the time she had a boar living in the grounds of her home at By, which she studied to help her complete the work. It had to be killed a few years later when it became too savage. This one of only few pictures of Boars, Bonheur completed. Despite her famous love for animals, she considered the Boar 'heavy and uncouth'.
