Matt Exley

Hello, my name is Matt Exley and I’m one of the researchers working on the ‘Pride and Prejudice project’. This means that I’m investigating the Museum of Liverpool’s extensive collections to discover objects with LGBT significance, to research and publish them to help tell Liverpool’s LGBT history. My particular interest is the story of Liverpool’s diverse LGBT communities, venues, campaigns and histories.

I’ve worked at the Museum of Liverpool since it opened in 2011, in the Education team and then as part of the team of curators who were involved in creating the museum, and who take care of our wonderful collections and plan new and exciting exhibitions based on the story of Liverpool, its history and culture.

I first came to Liverpool to study my BA and MA degrees at the University of Liverpool. I have had a deep interest in local history since then, especially the way that the ordinary lives of Liverpudlians have changed over the last two centuries. I am therefore incredibly excited to work on this project, to help better understand and improve the representation of Liverpool’s diverse LGBT communities.

Since starting the project I have greatly enjoyed meeting with members of the city’s LGBT communities, and hearing their stories to gain a better understanding how life in Liverpool has changed for LGBT people through the 20th century and in to the 21st. If you are interested in the project and would like to share your thoughts, memories and experiences please do get in touch - I’d love to hear from you.
