The radical bookshop, News From Nowhere, first opened on Manchester Road, Liverpool on 1 May 1974. The shop moved twice until finding premises on Bold Street, where it is situated today.
It is now owned by a Workers Co-Operative who run the shop as a non-profit community business with proceeds being put back into the business. Since 1981 it has been a women’s collective, giving women experience in running a small business.
During the 1980s, News From Nowhere sustained repeated arson attacks from right-wing fascists and later faced huge competition from chain bookstores and internet book sales.
Despite all of this it remains a successful and important hub, especially to the LGBT community. The shop stocks a wide range of books offering guidance, support and advice and has been the first port of call for many LGBT people on their journey of ‘coming out’.
