William Graham

Politician, collector and art patron (1817 - 1885)

Graham was senior partner in the family business, W. and J. Graham & Co., which imported dry goods from India and port from Portugal. In 1865 Graham was elected Liberal MP for the city of Glasgow but stood down in 1884 due to illness. He was an important art patron and collector in the 1860's and 1870's and particularly enjoyed the works of the Pre-Raphaelites such as Rossetti and Burne-Jones. Graham commissioned 'Dante's Dream' but as Rossetti made the painting much larger than Graham had asked for, he had to return the painting as it was too large for his house.
