Detail of 'Man of War in a Harbour' showing the long boat and davits
There are many details of nautical interest. To cite just a few, the flagship has not yet recovered her long boat which is being towed astern with two seamen occupants. On passage, this will be secured to the empty davits seen projecting from the stern at deck level.
Just below, also extending the whole width of the stern, a secluded group of senior officers take the air on the stern gallery, insulated from the hundreds of seamen and marines crowding the decks and rigging in the organised pandemonium of setting sail.
