In comparison to the small overpainted cracks|, other repairs from previous restorations were more extensive, particularly around the edges where large areas of original paint had been lost or damaged when the painting was transferred from its original poplar panel to canvas, probably in the early 19th century. As can be seen above where the dark overpaint is present along much of the lower edge.
