Analysis of materials and techniques used in Gainsborough's 'Viscountess Folkestone'

During the course of the conservation treatment a number of paint samples were taken from the edges of paint loss or damage in order to investigate the materials and techniques used in the painting. The paint samples were magnified by up the 400 times in order to study the different layers.

Analysis of the paint samples and x-rays of the painting revealed significant alterations to the composition.
