Colours in the curtain

detail of the curatin, showing areas of shadow and highlight

The pigments that Gainsborough uses are typical of the 18th century and the paint mixtures typical of his technique. The greens of the curtain are painted with mixtures of Prussian blue, yellow ochre, green earth, lead white and probably an organic yellow. Shadows are created in broad, thin strokes of dark blue and green, while white and yellow are added for highlights of strong, pale green.
