Paint cross section from the upper right background

This paint sample was taken from the area above and to the right of the sitter, where the x-ray shows that Gainsborough initially painted a landscape before changing the setting to an interior.

The magnified cross section shows thin grey-brown layers just above the thick, pale pink ground layer, which correspond to a thinly painted, cloudy sky. Over this are the layers of the green curtain with its yellow-green highlight from the finished composition.
