Painted wooden clock

Wooden cased clock with inlaid floral design and decorative brass detailing

This English spring clock with a repeating mechanism was made by Gabriel Smith of Chester in around 1735. The painted wooden case carries a floral design, which is probably original. The clock has brass finials, feet and top handle. The clock has to be wound once a week using a hollow square key inserted in the hole in the dial. The engraved and partly gilt face is very finely made, adding to the clock’s decorative appeal.
