The Carolina wood duck 'Aix sponsa (Linnaeus)' is a species which occurs in the West Indies. The West Indies has an incredibly rich bird fauna. The first great expert on West Indian birds was James Bond, whose name was adopted by a certain Ian Fleming. World Museum Liverpool has a very good collection of birds from many of the West Indian islands. This Carolina duck shows how good taxidermy can give an accurate and realistic appearance. When trying to identify a poorly preserved specimen, DNA analysis can help.
