The statue of the Spirit of Liverpool was located on top of the Walker Art Gallery on William Brown Street for over a century from 1877. In 1993 it was removed as it was no longer structurally safe. A replica Spirit of Liverpool was carved in marble and put back in place of the original on the roof of the Walker Art Gallery. The original sculpture was conserved and is now in the Conservation Centre.
