Conservators often use cutting edge technology to investigate delicate ancient objects without damaging them. One of the newest techniques is CT (Computerised Tomography) scanning. Click on different areas of the mummy of Pedeamun above to see examples of CT scans through his body displayed in the box below.

CT scan of nose area

CAT scan. Cross section of the head showing the nasal cavity and eye packing

Hole evident in nasal cavity bones where brain has been extracted during mummification. The eyes may have been removed during mummification and replaced with packing. Look for the shaped eyes cover pieces, a white shape over the eye area.

Further information

Pedeamun himself is on display in Reveal at the National Conservation Centre, with a special interactive that allows visitors to thoroughly investigate what lies under his bandages - without removing a single one.
