Conservation technologies
Conservation Technologies were commissioned to create an interactive 3D exhibit of a Classical sculpture of the Greek goddess Artemis. The original 1.8 metre tall marble statue, which is part of the Ince Blundell collection of sculpture, was made in the 18th century from a mixture of Classical pieces of the original sculpture, pieces of other Classical sculptures that were reworked to fit and pieces that were 'newly' carved. Artemis is actually a highly complex 3D puzzle comprising 123 pieces.
The statue of Artemis was laser scanned and the 3D data used to describe how the sculpture was made, in a colour-coded digital image in which: green is 18th century part of the sculpture, orange is classical pieces of sculpture, re-worked in the 18th century, lilac is pieces from a classical sculpture of Artemis, re-worked in the 18th century, purple is structural information. The colour-coded areas are clearly shown in this video:
The data was then used to create an interactive exhibit. The model was scaled down in size first and the individual pieces for the interactive were then 'digitally' designed.
