Richard Sharples' installation

Richard Sharples' exhibition, 'Matters of Life and Death' was created by the artist in 2007 for display at the now disused Royal Ear Hospital, London. Using 3D laser scanning, we were able to assist Richard in the realisation of a major work for the exhibition. The piece uses suspended autumn leaves to create a three dimensional 3.8 metre tall image of the artist's mother's face.

Both the artist and his mother came to our studios in central Liverpool where, using non-contact 3D laser scanning, we created a high resolution 3D virtual model of Richard's mother. We scaled up the 3D data set to 3.8m in size and inserted a virtual plane as a ceiling locator. Richard then took very accurate measurements from this file to provide him with the exact positions at which to suspend the leaves in the exhibition space.
