The myth

Eros was one of the earliest gods. In early Greek mythology he was regarded as the god of love and sexual desire and was worshipped as a fertility deity. Eros was seen as the embodiment of the creative force of nature; beautiful and handsome, the most loved and loving of all gods.

The original sculpture

The original marble bust of Eros was found in the town of Lunghezza on the outskirts of Rome, Italy. It was later bought by Henry Blundell, whilst on his travels through Italy, for his collection at Ince Blundell Hall|.

The bust was sculpted in fine porcelain-like Parian marble, found on the island of Paros in the Greek Aegean sea. Although impossible to attribute to any one Classic Greek sculptor the main part of the sculpture is likely to be approximately two thousand years old. The nose, lips and socle are later restorations and date to the 18th century.
