How Rabbit Beat Tortoise in a Race

Sun
The Yoruba folk story of how wily Tortoise beat much faster Rabbit in a race has been for centuries part of the Nigerian oral culture.

As part of Black History Month 2003, National Museums Liverpool developed a project to produce a published version of the traditional tale, retold by Ronnie Williams and Sewanu Jones.

Children from Liverpool 8 primary schools were invited to create illustrations for the book. The children took part in a visit to Liverpool Museum, where they learnt more about traditional African culture and listened to a professional performance of the tale.

Karl Eversley, a local artist, led a number of workshops with the group to create vivid and colourful illustrations for a published version of the story.

This website contains the artwork produced by the children, an animated version of the story and project diaries from the children who took part.
