Beatles 'Yellow Submarine' metal artwork

Accession number ISM.2009.4

metal plaque painted with characters from The Beatles' animated film 'Yellow Submarine'

This brilliantly vivid and colourful piece of metal art was commissioned by fair-trade importer Global Crafts|, a member of IFAT - the World Fair Trade Organisation| - to celebrate its attendance at the Museums Association Conference 2008 at Liverpool's Echo Arena.

The artwork shows off the creative skills of the Caribbean Crafts| artisans who made it. Caribbean Crafts was founded in Haiti in 1990 by a group of young entrepreneurs with the aim of promoting employment in Haiti.

The piece also highlights issues on global inequalities, linking with the legacies of the transatlantic slave trade. Haiti, formerly Saint-Domingue, was the site of a slave rebellion which created the first independent Black republic of Haiti. It is at present the poorest country in the Western hemisphere.
