This was a special display of William Hoare's portrait of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo, the earliest British oil painting of a freed slave and the first portrait that honours an African subject and Muslim as an individual and equal.

This painting is property of the Qatar Museums Authority/ Orientalist Museum, Doha, OM 762 and was on loan to the International Slavery Museum as part of a partnership project with the National Portrait Gallery, South Shields Museum & Art Gallery and New Walk Museum & Art Gallery Leicester.
