The staff at the International Slavery Museum would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted for the museum in the finals of the Best Heritage Project category of The National Lottery Awards 2009. We really appreciate your support.
The awards were broadcast live on BBC1 on Saturday 5 September 2009 as part of the National Lottery draw.
Despite a massive number of votes we unfortunately lost out to Stourport Canal Basins in the Midlands. However as part of the final a film about the International Slavery Museum was shown on the programme and it was a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness with a national audience about the work the museum is doing.
"We are absolutely thrilled to have reached the finals of the Awards. We beat hundreds of other projects from all over the UK to get to that stage and we have been overwhelmed by the support we received from the public, which goes a long way in recognising the impact the International Slavery Museum is making, not just in the local community, but also on a national and international level. The Awards have been a fantastic opportunity for us to thank everyone who is involved in our project especially staff, volunteers and the people behind the scenes who have enabled us to make the most of our Lottery funding and help make the International Slavery Museum a success." Richard Benjamin, head of the International Slavery Museum
Congratulations also go to Sefton Performing Arts and Creative Education Centre (SPACE) who won the Best Arts Project category and collected a prize of £2,000.
The National Lottery Awards are an annual search to find the UK's favourite Lottery-funded projects. Lottery players raise £25 million each week for Good Causes and the Awards are a great way to highlight how that funding has changed the UK for the better.
The Awards are in seven categories, reflecting the different types of projects that benefit from Lottery funding. The International Slavery Museum is in the finals of the Best Heritage Project category.
