US Black History Month event
International Slavery Museum, Liverpool

A special event to celebrate US Black History Month, looking at the development of civil rights in a local, national and international context. There will also be an opportunity to view rare archive footage exploring the civil rights movement and the lives of some of the greatest African American achievers.

Tuesday 17 February
Keep your eyes on the prize
- 12-12.30pm An inspiring performance telling the true story of Diane Nash and her involvement in the civil rights movement and the non-violent student protests in 1960s America.
The performance takes place in the Anthony Walker Education Centre on the 3rd floor.
From Lincoln to Obama: a look at the progress of civil rights
A series of talks in the Merseyside Maritime Museum lecture theatre on the 4th floor:
- 12.55pm Welcome by Dr Richard Benjamin, head of the International Slavery Museum
- 1pm Introduction of speakers by Dr David Fleming, director of National Museums Liverpool
- 1.05pm Richard LeBaron, Chargé d'Affaires at the United States Embassy in London
- 1.20pm Simon Woolley, the national co-ordinator of Operation Black Vote in the UK
- 1.35pm Questions and answers, chaired by Dr David Fleming
- 1.55pm Comments by Wally Brown CBE, former Principal of Liverpool Community College
