Hyatt established Liverpool's Elimu Academy, the country's first independent school to cater for Black and racial minority pupils. She was Liverpool's first Black headteacher.
Born in Toxteth, Liverpool to an Irish mother and Jamaican father, Hyatt spent many of her formative years in foster care homes before teaching in Liverpool secondary schools.
In 2003 she was awarded an MBE. She is a member of the General Teaching Council for England and now works as an independent consultant.
