This online catalogue features some 1,000 works of art from the Chinese collections at the Lady Lever Art Gallery (LLAG). The objects can be searched and viewed, and are accompanied by a series of essays that place the collection, and Lever the collector, in the context of late 19th and early 20th century art collecting generally and Chinese art collecting in particular.
The LLAG Chinese collections consist primarily of 17th-18th century porcelain (Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong periods) with smaller collections of reverse paintings on glass, cloisonné, jade and other hardstones, snuff bottles and earlier ceramics of the Han, Tang and Song dynasties (2nd century BCE - 14th century AD).
The catalogue is the result of substantial research undertaken by Professor Nick Pearce and Dr Yupin Chung (contact details here) of the University of Glasgow. The research has made full use of the comprehensive archives and published sources held at the LLAG and elsewhere. It has been possible to document Lever's collecting activities and provide the important link to previous collectors, dealers and auction-sales.
