'Lingering Autumn' 1890

Millais stayed in
Perthshire, Scotland, during most autumns in the neighbourhood of his
wife's home. He painted several scenes of the Scottish landscape, evoking
the changing moods of the bleak seasons of the year. At the same time,
he used a straightforward, realistic style.
'Lingering Autumn' is painted in mellow yellows and greys. It is a view
of the mill-stream at Murthly looking south. The river Tay is visible
in the background. The child carrying the water away from the sluice is
said to have been posed by Effie Stewart, the daughter of a local ploughman.
