About this object

A blue jasper vase featuring white jasper applied decoration of the Muses, led by Apollo. In the ancient world Muses were goddesses of inspiration in literature, science and the arts. The white jasper decoration is formed in a mould and then applied. This type of decoration is called sprigging. On top of the lid is a figure of Pegasus, the winged horse.
