About this object

A blue jasper tablet depicting the Greek legend of the Fall of Phaethon after he is granted the opprtunity to drive the Chariot of the Sun. The tablet was modelled by the Liverpool artist George Stubbs (1724-1806). He modelled it whilst staying with Wedgwood to paint a family portrait in 1780. Wedgwood disliked the design and only made a few of them in jasper.
The top of the tablet is a much later wooden addition. It is painted, blue with clouds, to blend in with the jasper.
