About this object

A black basalt relief bust, portrait medallion of Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727). He is shown three-quarter-face to right in integral laurel-wreath frame. For this medallion of Newton, Wedgwood is known to have copied a portrait by David Le Marchand (1674-1726) which was carved in ivory.
