About this object

This small box is made from tortoiseshell with gold inlay. The lid is set with a lilac and green jasper medallion which has applied white jasper decoration.The medallion depicts a nymph making a sacrifice.
The inside of the box is covered with decorative straw-work, the base having a floral straw-work pattern.
It is likely that this box would have been used to contain small sweets called bon-bons.
