Snuff box

LL 2324

About this object

A gold snuffbox inset with a Wedgwood blue and white jasper cameo of Empress Catherine II the Great of Russia. The box is decorated with enamel decoration and it has a base made of Russian agate.
The box was made in Switzerland so the Wedgwood cameo may have been especially ordered for the box.
Snuff is made from dried, powdered, tobacco and it needed to be kept in a box with a very tight fitting lid in order to retain its freshness.
