About this object

A large double sided box made from gold inset with a brown and blue jasper medallion on one side and a green and blue jasper medallion on the other. Each medallion is decorated with white jasper sprigging.
This large box may be a table snuff box. Snuff is made from dried, powdered, tobacco. Snuff should be kept in a box with a tightly sealing lid in order to keep it fresh. During the eighteenth century snuff taking was very popular with both men and women.
