About this object

A blue jasper portrait medallion featuring Wedgwood's friend Dr Joseph Priestley (1733- 1804), discoverer of oxygen. Joseph Priestley and Wedgwood were members of the Lunar Society of Birmingham. The Lunar Society met monthly on the Monday night nearest to the full moon. The group discussed the latest ideas in science and technology. Many members supported social reform, such as the abolition of slavery.
