Newquay, 1906

Charles Conder (1868-1909)

Conder stayed near Towan Beach, Newquay from August to September 1906. This view along that beach presents a truly evocative image of the Edwardian seaside. The bathing huts at the water's edge, the women paddling with rolled-up skirts and petticoats, and the fashionably dressed promenaders in the foreground are all typical hallmarks of the early twentieth-century seaside resort.
