A Grey DayDaniel Alexander Williamson 1823-1903Watercolour, dated 1865Accession number WAG 85
Bequeathed to the Walker Art Gallery by James Smith, 1923 Williamson was a Liverpool follower of the Pre-Raphaelites. In the 1860s he lived in North Lancashire, first at Carnforth and then at Broughton in Furness, on the fringes of the Lake District. The exact location of this view is not known. By the date of this watercolour he was beginning to broaden his style. However, in the foreground he retained the glowing translucency of colour applied over a white ground, a characteristic of Pre-Raphaelite technique.
