A study of Brown's second daughter, by his second wife Emma. It was drawn in 1852 when she was one and a half years old. Another portrait of her is seen as the baby lying on her mother's lap in the painting 'Waiting' (Walker Art Gallery)|, begun in the previous year. Catherine is also seen as a young woman in The Nosegay|, a watercolour in this exhibition.
Cathy became an artist. She married a music critic Franz Hueffer. Their eldest son became famous, after a change of surname, as the novelist Ford Madox Ford.
