A study of the artist's elder daughter Lucy, by his first wife Elizabeth. After only seven years of marriage, Elizabeth died. Brown made this portrait immediately after visiting her grave at Highgate Cemetery, London. He wrote in his diary:

'drew a little head of my beautiful babe. It is today 18 months since the death of my poor dear wife. These are thoughts I must banish, it unnerves me. I have dedicated the day to my child and the memory of her mother.'

In later life, Lucy married the brother of the artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
