John (or Jack) Urton was born in Chesterfield in 1876, and married Mary Elizabeth (or Biddy) Peat in Salford in 1897. They moved to the Wirral in the early 1900s, first to Birkenhead, and later to Bebington, where Jack worked as a draughtsman. Their daughters Mary Elizabeth and Esther Lois were born in 1903 and 1906 respectively. The 1908 directory lists a John Urton as a draughtsman at Grange Vale, New Chester Road, Rock Ferry.

The Urtons seem to have been an average middle class family, employing a housemaid who features in some of the photographs with the family. There are very few images taken indoors; the majority were taken in the garden. Jack’s parents appear in a number of the pictures posing with their granddaughters, their dress recalling an earlier Victorian age.
