Opening times

Open 10am-5pm daily.

FREE ADMISSION to the gallery and all exhibitions and events.

Closed from 2pm on 24 December, all day 25 and 26 December and 1 January.

Room closure: The rooms housing our Wedgwood and Greek pottery collections are currently closed to the public, due to building work going on in the basement below.

Please note: The Port Sunlight Orchestra will be rehearsing and performing at the Lady Lever Art Gallery on the following dates;

  • Sunday 28 February 2010
  • Sunday 18 April 2010

During rehearsals and concerts the visibility of some parts of the gallery displays may be slightly restricted. For further information about concerts and tickets please visit the orchestra’s website.

By road:

From Liverpool: Go through the Birkenhead (Queensway) Tunnel (£1.40 toll for cars, £4.20 for coaches). Once you leave the tunnel follow signs for Port Sunlight, driving along A41(New Chester Road) - the gallery is sign posted all the way from the tunnel. At the roundabout take the third exit (Bolton Road). Take the right hand turn after the Bridge Inn. Continue along Church Drive passing the church and then the school on your right. Turn left into Windy Bank where you will see the gallery in front of you.

From elsewhere: Leave the M53 at junction 4, follow the B5137 and take the second left onto the B5136 towards Port Sunlight. Follow the brown and white road signs for Port Sunlight Village. Once you are in the village follow the signs for Lady Lever Art Gallery.

By train: train icon

The nearest train station is Bebington although Port Sunlight is also within walking distance. They are both on the Chester and Ellesmere Port Merseyrail lines. Leave the station and come out onto Old Chester Road (use the ramp if you require level access). Turn left, cross at the traffic lights, then turn left again down Bebington Road, passing under the railway bridge. Turn next right down Greendale Road. Continue along the pavement on the same side as the cottages for approximately 400 yards until you see the Leverhulme memorial and the Lady Lever Art Gallery on your left. Take the pathway on your left leading into Windy Bank and towards the memorial and the gallery. The entrance to the gallery is to the right side of the building opposite the fountain.

By bus: bus icon

Take number 464 to Bebington Road bus stop (starts at Sir Thomas Street in Liverpool city centre) or number 38 to Bebington rail station bus stop (runs between Clatterbridge Hospital and West Kirby station). Once you get off the bus refer to the above directions from Bebington railway station.

There is free parking for over 100 cars outside the gallery. This includes four spaces for disabled visitors immediately outside the gallery.

Free admission

Admission to Lady Lever Art Gallery and all the National Museums Liverpool venues is FREE. All events and exhibitions are also FREE.

Visitor facilities

Coats and bags can be left at the main information desk on the ground floor and at the shop information desk in the basement. We ask that visitors avoid bringing large bags into the gallery. Free lockers are available for large bags in the ground floor cloakroom. Buggies can be stored in either facility although prams should go in the shop cloakroom.

We do not have a prayer room, but visitors can use the education room if it is available. Please ask a member of staff.

Artwork information is available on table-top type displays in each gallery.

The shop in the basement, accessible via either stairs or a lift, sells a wide range of books, cards, gifts and prints. It is open 10am-4.55pm.

There are areas of grass around the Lady Lever Art Gallery which can be used for a picnic on a nice day. Please dispose of rubbish responsibly. In bad weather it may be possible to let small groups use the education room - please ask a member of staff.

Feel free to bring your mp3 player or mobile phone with you but please turn phones to 'vibrate only' and please consider other visitors when adjusting your volume levels. We have a number of gallery talks available to download before your visit (these are not available on the gallery).

Visitors can borrow audio guides from the front information desk.

Visitors can use the free wi-fi connection at the Lady Lever café. Simply log on and and the wireless provider is Café.

Visitors requiring access to our archives must contact a curator in advance and will be supervised at all times by a member of staff. Contact the information desk on 0151 478 4136.

If you are visiting to see a particular artwork we suggest you contact us in advance to ensure it is on gallery (we sometimes remove objects for conservation or lend them to other galleries). Call the information desk on 0151 478 4136.

The café is open from 10am - 4.30pm serving sandwiches, snacks, main meals, desserts and drinks. Café enquiries can be directed via our 'contact us' system.

There is a free wi-fi connection at the café. Simply log on and and the wireless provider is Café. For café menus, please see our Shopping & Eating page.

Photography and filming no flash photography icon

Non-commercial photography is permitted but neither flash nor tripods can be used. A consent form must be signed at the front desk. Photography is not generally permitted in temporary exhibitions.

Visitors wanting to use the venue for location shooting of any kind should contact our press department. More information on location shooting can be found here.

Buggies can be stored in the cloakroom near the main entrance. Prams should go in the cloakroom in the basement. Please ask a member of staff for assistance.

There are baby changing facilities in the wheelchair accessible toilet which is in the basement, towards the back of the cafe.

Cafe staff are happy to warm bottles. There are also highchairs available on request.

There is a selection of children's work sheets and gallery trails to pick up around the gallery, or you could print them off in advance. See the 'useful downloads' section of this webpage.

We have an on-gallery 'artbase' trolley containing lots of materials for dressing up and drawing.

We regularly run sessions aimed at children - check out the what's on section for more details, or register to receive a quarterly family events guide. This is also available in large print.

We ask that visitors supervise their children at all times.

Planning your visit

We produce large print versions of both of our quarterly what's on publications. Our Family Guide describes our free family exhibitions, events and activities, while our Exhibitions and Events Guide has more on our wide-ranging temporary exhibitions, talks and workshops. They can be requested through our register with us page.

Getting into the gallery

There are four reserved spaces immediately outside the gallery, plus over 100 other parking spaces in the same car park. The car park is a flat surface.

Access to the gallery is via a ramp, to the left of the building from the car park, into our new improved entrance area.

Assistance dogs are welcome.

Getting around the gallery

Two wheelchairs are available to borrow from the information desk at the main entrance.

There is a wheelchair accessible toilet in the basement towards the back of the cafe (reached via a lift from the ground floor).

The cafe is in the basement (reached via a lift from the ground floor). Neither tables nor chairs are fixed to the floor. Waitress service is available. The cafe does not have a lowered serving counter. There are large print menus. The cafe is open 10am-4.30pm.

Documents can be requested in large print.

On the gallery

There is a lift between the basement and the ground floor where the vast majority of the galleries can be found. However, given the nature of the building there is no lift access to the smaller mezzanine level.

We have audio guides to borrow from the entrance information desk. The main desk, shop and the café serving area have hearing loops.

There are large print guides available.

Dial-a-Ride

The Merseylink Service is a dial-a-ride service for Merseyside people with mobility problems or difficulties, who cannot use or have difficulty using public transport. The service runs from 8am to 11pm daily and can be used by members for travel anywhere in Merseyside. The service is free for members and one essential travel companion. Learning sessions and group bookings

There is a programme of regular events at Lady Lever Art Gallery. Please check our website or call 0151 478 4143 for more information.

You can register to receive a regular events guide.

There is also a programme of sessions for schools, including teachers' sessions. You can search a database of these events, and also access information on making your visit a successful one.
