Explore - Bluecoat working with Sutton Manor

A lady showing a child how to paint

In the first year of Find Your Talent the Bluecoat worked with two primary schools from St Helens, Sutton Manor and St Austin's. The schools were working with artists in class and at the Bluecoat to develop two new Explore resources. Working with artist Marcus Soukup, Sutton Manor developed a listening resource. The resource looks at literacy and getting children to listen to what they can hear in different locations and then write a poem responding to the sounds.

St Austin's have been worked with artist Andy Weston who is a local artist. They developed a resource that classes and families can use to explore different materials, especially those that can be found at the Bluecoat. Both resources are ready for schools to use when visiting the Bluecoat along with downloadable lesson plans with follow-up activity ideas.

Poem

A handwritten poem and drawings

I heard...

The buzzing of the angry bee,
Slowly turning calm.
Hear the crunching of the leaf's,
Scattered on the floor swishing,
this this way and that.
Hear the whispering of the children,
With their heads down slowly working
Hear the cars zooming up the road,
Slowing down in front of every bump.
Hear the van's being quiet then,
becoming creaky to a stop.
Hear the tweeting of the birds, hear the,
chatting of the children.

By Hollie Hamilton, Y4, Sutton Manor Primary

The project was very successful because it made the children really stop and listen to sounds all around them. They appreciated the opportunity to be quiet and it made them feel happy. In listening, they also had time to really look at the exhibits in the gallery. It's not often that a group of 8 and 9 year olds sit, without talking and simply listening for two hours. We also enjoyed thinking about memorable sounds and the colours that we think of when we think of various sounds.
