Make the Link - Be the Change!

Learn, communicate, interpret, act

Background to the project

Following the success of the award-winning Make the Link, Break the Chain project, National Museums Liverpool and Plan UK are again working together in an international school twinning project that will link over 3,000 pupils in 13 countries. The theme this year is climate change, and the response has already been fantastic.

Children from 25 schools and groups in 12 countries (El Salvador, Ecuador, Brazil, Haiti, India, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Senegal, Malawi, Philippines, Bangladesh and Indonesia) plus 50 north west schools will work and learn together over one academic year. They'll share thoughts and ideas on climate change, and work to develop new creative projects on the theme.

The project kicked off with a video conference in July 2008, linking pupils from Shorefields Technology College in Liverpool and two schools from Sierra Leone. The students talked about their hopes, hobbies and thoughts on climate change.

What will happen?

Starting September 08 and running to July 09 the participating children will work together through an online resource (shown here) where they can chat in forums, post their thoughts on a blog, upload images and video etc. Activity will be mainly classroom based and will focus on the issue of climate change, the causes, its repercussions and possible solutions. There will also be an online space for teachers to chat about the progress of their pupils' projects, swap ideas and share resources.

The online activity will become the inspiration for creative offline projects in each participating country, which it is hoped will lead to positive local action to address climate change.

The project will culminate in an online presentation of the work produced and an exhibition at National Museums Liverpool. The work will also be displayed at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in 2009 (COP15, formerly the Kyoto conference) as part of the Children in a Changing Climate display.
