Engaging refugees and asylum seekers

This project aims to develop a range of events for asylum seekers and refugees at National Museums Liverpool. These take the form of informal learning opportunities or social activities developed with local refugee and asylum organisations.

Young people, families, adults and volunteers are particularly targeted but all groups are welcome. Activities can be tailored to fit the requirements of each group.

The project is funded by the Department for Education and Skills and the Baring Foundation, and aims to explore the contribution that museums and galleries can make to support refugees and asylum seekers.

National Museums Liverpool is working in partnership with three other museum services: Tyne and Wear Museums, Salford Museum and Art Gallery and Leicester City Museums Service.

Engaging refugees and asylum seekers - a best practice guide for museums and galleries

This guide is designed to support museum and gallery staff wishing to reach out to asylum seekers and refugees. It suggests approaches to making contacts, developing appropriate activities, coping with language differences, evaluation and sustainability.

Based upon the experiences of the four museum services working in partnership on this project, it lists various strategies for engaging with this audience so as to provide appropriate facilities and events.

Displays and exhibitions

Refugee Week projects

Refugee Week was first introduced in 1998, aiming to celebrate the contribution that refugees make to the UK and encourage a better understanding between communities.

During Refugee Week each year a range of arts, educational and cultural events take place throughout the country to promote understanding and address the fear, ignorance and negative stereotypes often associated with refugees.

The Engaging Refugees and Asylum Seekers project at National Museums Liverpool has worked with local refugees and asylum seekers on a number of Refugee Week projects, including the following:

  • Three Refugee Week exhibitions were launched in 2007 at World Museum Liverpool and the Walker Art Gallery.
  • Finding a Safe Place was a display of children's artwork produced during Refugee Week 2005 and displayed at the former Museum of Liverpool Life from 30 September 2005 to 15 January 2006.
